“Star Trek: Lower Decks” centers on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s most insignificant ships, the USS Cerritos, in the year 2380. Midshipmen Mariner, Beumler, Rutherford, and Tandy must navigate their duties and social lives, often while the ship is rocked by a series of sci-fi anomalies. The ship’s bridge crew includes Captain Carol Freeman, Commander Jack Ransom, Lieutenant Shax, and Doctor T’Anna. It is the second animated spinoff in the franchise, following 1973-74’s Star Trek: The Animated Series , but has a decidedly older tone and humor.
