William Lee: Sit on Your Ass!
Chronology
In 1950s Mexico City, an American immigrant in his late forties lives a lonely life in the midst of a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student finally inspires the man to have a meaningful relationship with someone.. Daniel Craig eventually watches audition tapes with Guadagnino and tells him that he is "the guy" after seeing Starkey.. Or What Remains of Four Years in the Navy..
The Graham Norton Show features: Daniel Craig/Nicola Coughlan/Jesse Eisenberg/Kieran Culkin/Flo (2024)
I Never Saw Naked Lunch (1991) but won the 2024 London Film Festival’s 'Queer' I kept thinking about it during the screening: William S Burroughs may have provided the source material for both films. Set in 1950s Mexico, William Lee is an American writer on the wrong side of the… forty? fifty?
But what does Eugene want?
He spends his days getting drunk, shooting, and having casual sex with other men. One day, a muscular, smart young hunk named Eugene walks into a bar and hits on Lee. And there’s a telepathic drug that can make you think… Stylistically, I’m not sure what director Luca Guadagnino is trying to achieve with this film.
With an accent that’s clearly not his own
The sets are decorated almost exclusively in block colors – dark red and olive green, for example – and have that vaguely unrealistic, clean, technological look that I thought was intended to pay homage to the films of the era in which the film is set. But if that’s the case, why the decidedly 1950s rock and techno soundtrack? Daniel Craig (is it my imagination or is he starting to sound like Sid James?) has to constantly deliver absurd speeches in the lead role. Drew Starkey is able to give a subtle performance as the manipulative Eugene, and certainly looks the part Preppy.
It’s okay to watch once but I won’t watch it again
Leslie Manville is unrecognizable as a doctor living in the South American jungle – well done to the makeup team! This is the kind of film that I feel is more about the artistic style than the storytelling substance.
